Apples to Apples – Business Innovation Or is it All Hype, Great Marketing, Or Branding?

by admin

Is Apple Computers the most innovative company in the world? Some believe so, but it seems to me all their so-called innovation is merely incremental, borrowed, bought, or happens to be first to market. Now, people could say that Steve Jobs is their savior, and point to the iPod, iPhone, iPad, and perhaps the future iCar, and iBigWheel with a GPS system and alternative energy charging device when you peddle, but are any of these so far ahead of the competition that they really set Apple out above the field?

Has anyone ever wondered where Apple would be without all the “hype” and road show marketing propaganda? I realize that many people have taken to Apple like some sort of religion, and that’s fine and all that; to each his own, never-the-less, what if?

“What if” Apple didn’t market the way they do, would anyone really believe they are the end all, be all? Everyone says that Apple is the most innovative company, and if you do not believe their hypsters you can ask the company themselves and they will tell you; “Indeed we are the most innovative”

Whereas, Apple has many brand-loyalists, I guarantee you, I am not one, nor do I wish to be gouged by the hype and pay too much for what they are producing. It is fairly obvious to me that Apple cares about one thing – stock price. And to keep it up, they have to keep introducing new stuff and hype the crap out of it. I have hype fatigue when it comes to Apple, so take a bite out of that!

The reality is that Bill Gates at Comdex 1997 had a wrist watch emailing device, and yet, it was never brought to market. Touch Screen technologies are not new, nor is the hand motion systems for flipping pages or moving screens. MIT had that years ago, and we even saw in the movie Minority Report, the use of such systems, a guy in Los Angeles invented that system. Lockheed Martin has a patent to use it for air traffic control.

Microsoft had shown the world their flat panel, tablet like, touch screens for restaurant tables and business purposes. Apple just packaged it nice and hyped the ever living crap out of it. Good for them, but that does not necessarily make them the best innovative company in 2010, it just makes them the best branding and marketing company this year. Just like the Obama Campaign did the best branding for him to get elected president. Please consider all this.
